Mannville McQueen Memorial United Church

This beautiful church in the serene town of Mannville carries both the splendor of town's history and welcoming spirit of its people.

We are a Christ's believing community who also believe that everybody is welcome to experience with us the amazing love of God.

Our worship services are both modern and traditional.

After the worship we sit in our beautiful hall over refreshment as we catch-up on the events happening within our community.

Our talks range from the curling game of the week, “Blue Jay’s” performance, the Town Fairs, or the next music performance in our church.

Keep an eye on this as we often hold excellent events in our church attended by the whole community of Mannville and its surroundings.

Church History

Settlers began coming to Mannville area during the year 1905 and 1906.

Soon after their arrival the first protestant church was built by the Methodists on the south-east corner of 51st Street and 51st Ave.

This church was later used as school.

A Presbyterian Church was built in 1907 on the south-west corner of 49th street and 51st Ave in 1907.

Prior to the building of this church, services were held in homes by the ministers from Vermilion and Vegreville.

The first student minister was an outstanding young man named McQueen from Ontario who unfortunately met his death by drowning in the lake just west of Mannville.

When the Presbyterian Church was built, his mother gave a sum of money.

The church was called McQueen Memorial.

This church was totally destroyed by fire on February 22, 1914.

In June 1914, the old basement was cleaned out and work started on a new church.

After completion of the church, the Superintendent of Missions was urging that the church become self supporting and not depend on help from the church mission.

To accommodate married ministers a house was purchased as a manse.

This project was helped by the Ladies Association. In 1921 the ladies installed lights in the church.

Ministers in these early years were George A. Hopkins, Rev. George McConnel, Rev. H. Hillock, Mr. Buckie, Rev. Weir, G.S. Dummond, J.F. Watson, J. H. Buchanan and Mr. McLaggan.

In 1925, the Mannville Methodist and the Presbyterian Churches joined to become McQueen Memorial United Church with Rev. Hart followed by Rev. Bevan ministering.

In 1933 the ministers began serving Minburn and district congregation.

In 1944 the Innisfree Congregation joined the Mannville-Minburn Pastoral Charge (This has since changed with the closure of Minburn United Church).

In 1952 the Nash Memorial Church from the Wealthy district was brought in and attached to the church.

This provided much needed space for Sunday school, youth groups, and social functions.

A building fund had been accumulating for a new church to meet the needs of a growing community. The old church was removed to a new location, later to be dismantled and reconstructed into a beautiful home.

By March 28, 1958, the church was completed and dedication ceremony took place.

The ceremony of burning the mortgage took place in the Orange Hall in 1962. Great was the rejoicing on that occasion.

In 1983, a long awaited extension to the sanctuary and social room was completed with a minister’s study, an enlarged kitchen and a ramp approach.

The ladies Aid, Women’s Missionary Society, the Women’s Auxiliary and the United Church Women as organized through the years have worked diligently to provide for spiritual, physical and social needs of the church.

(Adopted from a script prepared by Mrs. Grace McPhee in 1961 and Mrs. Mabel Gamble in 1983 for Mannville History Book)

In 2013, McQueen United Church, Innisfree and First United Church Vermilion, joined together to become Vermilion-Mannville Pastoral Charge.

In 2020, the Pastoral Charge changed again and now includes McQueen United Church,  First United Church Vermilion, and Wesley United Church in Kitsoty under the new name, Vermilion River Pastoral Charge.
